Does Fumigation Kill Cockroaches, Rats, Ants and Bed Bugs? What It Actually Treats

Fumigation is not one treatment that works the same way on every pest. Here is a straight answer, pest by pest, including the ones it does not touch.

People searching "does fumigation kill cockroaches" or "does fumigation kill rats" are usually asking the same underlying question: will this actually solve my problem, or am I paying for a treatment that only deals with part of it? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is different for every pest. This guide goes through the common ones plainly, including one pest fumigation does not touch at all.

As we explain on our pest control page, "fumigation" in everyday Nairobi use covers almost any pest treatment, not only gas fumigation of a sealed space. That is the sense used throughout this guide.

Does fumigation kill cockroaches?

Yes, when it is done properly. Cockroach control works through gel bait placed in harbourages, which cockroaches carry back to the colony, plus residual treatment at the edges they travel along. It does not kill every cockroach on day one. Eggs already laid in a protected case hatch after the first visit, which is why a review visit is part of the job, not an upsell.

Does fumigation kill rats and mice?

It controls them rather than eliminating them in one step. Rodent control combines secure baiting stations, entry-point proofing and check visits. Bait kills rats and mice that take it, but a property with open entry points will keep attracting new ones from outside, so proofing matters as much as the bait itself.

Does fumigation kill bed bugs?

Only with more than one visit. Bed bug treatment kills bed bugs it contacts directly, but eggs are protected from most products and hatch 6 to 10 days later. That is why bed bug control is always at least two treatments, roughly 10 to 14 days apart, covering the bed, frame, skirting and nearby furniture, not just the mattress.

Does fumigation kill ants?

Household ant treatments can reduce and often clear an ant problem, using bait the workers carry back to the colony and queen, similar in principle to cockroach gel baiting. We treat ants when we see them during a visit for another pest and tell you plainly whether what we can offer will resolve it. If you have an established, standalone ant problem, such as a large outdoor nest or carpenter ants in timber, say so when you book, and we will tell you honestly whether that needs a different specialist.

Does fumigation kill fleas?

Flea treatment usually needs to happen on two fronts at once: the pet (which is a vet's job, not ours) and the home, where eggs and larvae sit in carpets, soft furnishings and pet bedding. Treating the house without treating the pet, or the other way round, tends to bring the problem straight back. Tell us if fleas are the issue and we will explain what the household side of the treatment involves and what you will need your vet to handle on the pet.

Does fumigation kill mosquitoes?

Fogging kills the adult mosquitoes flying in the treated area at the time, which is useful before an event or during a surge. It does not stop new ones hatching from standing water nearby. Mosquito control pairs fogging and indoor residual spraying with a breeding-site survey, because the lasting fix is removing the water they breed in, not the spray on its own.

Does fumigation kill snakes?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you. Snakes are not insects or rodents, and no fumigation chemical targets them. A snake sighting on a compound is usually about habitat: long grass, stacked materials, firewood or rodent activity attracting them in the first place. If rats are present, dealing with the rodent problem removes one of the reasons a snake would be on the property, but that is a side effect of rodent control, not a snake treatment. If you have a snake on the property now, contact a wildlife or snake-handling service, not a pest control company.

Why "one treatment kills everything" is a red flag

Different pests breed differently, hide differently and respond to different products. A company promising one visit will permanently clear bed bugs, or that a single spray handles cockroaches, rats and mosquitoes equally, is either overselling or planning to undersell the job. Our pest control pricing guide explains why the number of visits is built into the quote for pests that genuinely need it.

Frequently asked questions

Will one visit get rid of my pest problem completely?

For some pests, such as a small, early cockroach sighting, often yes. For bed bugs and most rodent problems, no — the job includes a follow-up visit from the start because the pest's life cycle requires it.

Why do I still see pests a few days after treatment?

For several pests this is expected. Bait-based treatments drive cockroaches and ants out of hiding as they react to it, and bed bug eggs hatch after the first visit. Activity should drop steadily, not stay level, over the following one to two weeks.

What should I do if I am not sure which pest I have?

Send a photo through our quote form or on WhatsApp. Droppings, bite patterns and the insects themselves all look different between pests, and the right treatment depends on getting this right first.

Can one visit cover more than one pest at a time?

Sometimes, if the pests and the areas they live in overlap, such as cockroaches and ants both found in a kitchen. Tell us everything you are seeing when you book so we can plan for all of it, not just the pest you mention first.
